Traveling can be a little stressful, and the stress is only intensified if you’re traveling while pregnant. Whether you’re traveling for a summer vacation or work, it’s important to keep your comfort and health in mind. Here are a few tips for traveling during pregnancy:
1. Focus on Time
Traveling, especially by plane, is all about timing. If possible, schedule trips between weeks 20 and 30 and avoid traveling after 38 weeks of pregnancy. Before purchasing a ticket, it’s also important to check the airline’s pregnancy flyer policy. While some don’t have specific rules for pregnant flyers, others have restrictions and rules.
2. Consult your OBGYN specialist before traveling
Review any medical concerns with your OBGYN or midwife before traveling. They’ll make you aware of any signs or symptoms to look out for. If you’re high risk, your physician may put more restrictions on your traveling.
3. Pack all essentials in your carry on bag.
We’ve all been in the situation where you land and your luggage is no where to be found. During pregnancy, it’s important to pack everything you need in your carry on bag, such as prenatal vitamins, a list of names and phone numbers in case of emergency and a prenatal chart if you’re in your third trimester.
4. Avoid Advanced Imaging Technology Scanners (AIT)
The new scanners that scan the entire body can cause harm to pregnant women. Ask the security administration agent for a pat down instead.
5. Don’t lift your bags
Avoid all heavy lifting while traveling, which includes lifting luggage. Ask for help from the people you are traveling with or from airport security so you don’t cause any harm to you or your baby.
